What to check on an open-box or liquidation item

Accessories only work if they fit, so start with compatibility.

• Exact model. Read the title and description for the phone model the item is made for. Cases and protectors that look similar can differ in camera cutouts, button placement and port openings. Compare against your phone's model name, not just its brand.
• Photos of the unit. Look closely at edges, corners and any clear or glossy surfaces. Scuffs, scratches, dust marks or discolouration will show up there, and the condition notes should mention them.
• What's included. For open-box items, check whether the listing says the original packaging, inserts or extra pieces are part of the sale. If something you'd expect isn't mentioned, don't assume it's there.
• Cables, chargers and mounts. Check the connector type, and look in the photos for bent ends, frayed sections or worn contacts.
• If a phone is listed. Read the notes on screen condition, cosmetic wear and any included accessories. Confirm any details that matter to you, such as storage or carrier compatibility, are stated in the listing before you buy.

If a detail you need isn't in the notes or photos, treat it as unconfirmed.
